Mo & Christine welcomed back Pay Chen (@PayChen on IG and Twitter) to continue her tips for Alternative Gift-Giving.

People will be shopping online more than ever this year. While the big companies are well-known and easy; let’s try to support the smaller, local, Canadian businesses and consider those who will be having a tougher holiday this year.

  1. FoodShare’s Holiday Gift Box: this local organization helps feed people who need it with their multiple food programs. They have affordable produce box subscriptions (serving the Toronto area) and try to make healthy food accessible to everyone. (Community gardens, kids cooking programs, providing healthy food to those who can not afford it etc..)

For the holidays they put together a limited number of HOLIDAY GIFT BOXES full of delicious treats delivered in the Toronto area.  $90 The perfect gift or corporate gift that gives to the recipient but also helps FoodShare continue their work of providing programs to underserved communities. This is a gift that supports the community. https://goodfoodbox.foodshare.net

  1. Support local restaurants by buying a gift card. Either purchase directly or consider Rally for Restaurants – it’s an online initiative that launched during the pandemic to support bars and restaurants with a gift card program. This gives restaurants money right away and the consumer can redeem the card when restaurants re-open or use it immediately if they offer takeout.

Any restaurant can sign up to register. You purchase a gift card for $25 or $50 and Stella Artois adds $10 to the value of the gift card…so it’s free money.

The beauty is over 1000 restaurants across Canada have registered so you can purchase a gift card to gift to someone who lives in another city or province.

  1. Helping Toronto seniors during COVID. The city of Toronto has a link where you can donate and all of the money goes towards items for Long Term Care homes: things like small gifts, acquiring technology that lets residents stay in touch with family, special holiday programming and items. Since we’re not seeing as many people in person – make a donation in lieu of a gift and know that you’re making the holidays brighter for someone who really needs it.
