Dwayne Johnson gets us excited for his new movie, “Moana,” by performing the Samoan Slap with two Hawaii locals on an episode of “Good Morning America”.

Here in Hawaii and for our world premiere trailer of #Moana I wanted to do something cool for the fans on live TV (Good Morning America) and give the world as taste of our Polynesian culture. This is our “Fa’ataupati” also known as the Samoan Slap Dance. This is the short version for tv but you can feel it’s power and mana. Shout to my boys @Ptevaga & @Arteec03 of #TihatiProductions for joining me at 3AM bringin’ the energy to introduce our culture to the world. And for helping me wake up all the hotel guests? This dance has got my creative wheels spinnin’ now to do something very special, cool and historic for our red carpet world premiere of #Moana at Thanksgiving. We’ll see. That may require a lot more baby oil?. #Moana #WorldPremiereTrailer #PolynesianCulture #FaaSamoa #TheJouneyBegins ???

There has been some controversy over how Disney has decided to portray his character, Maui, because unlike Dwayne Johnson’s chiseled abs, Maui is a big more…rotund.

Will Ilolahia from the Pacific Media Association told Waatea News that, “(Maui) is depicted in the stories that have been handed down, especially in my culture, as a person of strength, a person of magnitude and a person of a godly nature. This depiction of Maui being obese is typical American stereotyping.”

Jenny Salesa, a member of the New Zealand Parliament, posted on Facebook, “When we look at photos of Polynesian men and women from the last 100 to 200 years, most of our people were not overweight, and this negative stereotype of Maui is just not acceptable.” (That post appears to have been since deleted.)

Not everyone thinks the way Maui is drawn is supposed to be negative though. “I get more of a ‘strong, bodyguard-type’ vibe,” wrote Leah Damm from The Spinoff.

And designer Louie Mantia points out that several Disney characters are portrayed with the same build
