Commuters be prepared for some headaches this weekend – as the Gardiner closes down for annual spring maintenance!

From the City of Toronto website:

The City of Toronto’s Transportation Services division will be performing maintenance activities on the Gardiner Expressway starting this Friday. A full closure of the expressway is needed to ensure safety for the public and for those working at the site.

The Gardiner Expressway will be closed from Carlaw Avenue to Highway 427/QEW from 8 p.m. on Friday, May 1 to 6 a.m. on Sunday, May 3 for spring maintenance activities. The expressway will reopen early on Sunday to help improve traffic conditions during the Toronto Marathon, which takes place on Sunday between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. on various city streets.

Specific activities that will be undertaken during this closure include:
• chipping of loose concrete from areas such as ramps and bridges that cannot be done when the expressway is open
• in-depth bridge inspections
• road paving operations
• pothole repairs
• inspection of overhead signs
• catch basin cleaning
• pavement markings
• sign maintenance
• closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera maintenance
• inspection of overhead signs
• guiderail repair
• flushing and sweeping operations, and
• litter removal.

Motorists can use Lake Shore Boulevard, the Queensway, Richmond Street, King Street, Queen Street and Evans Avenue as alternative routes during the weekend closure.
