It is a crime in 70 countries to be gay and in more than 10 countries you could be killed for being gay. The Rainbow Railroad is an organization based in Toronto helping LGBTQ people being persecuted find safe passage out of the country.  CBS 60 Minutes did a story on the Railroad a few weeks ago which helped bring the organization to our attention.   Check out the full details of the work of the Rainbow Railroad here
