A Fitting ‘Extra’ Tribute, To Zach Sobiech..

We can’t think of a more perfect way to showcase Zach Sobiech’s beautiful song, “Clouds,” than this YouTube tribute. Uploaded by author Amy Krouse Rosenthal, the video combines clips from Pixar’s 2009 movie “Up” with the 18-year-old’s viral song that touched the lives of millions. Sobiech passed away on Monday (May 20 2013) from a rare form of bone cancer.

Rainn Wilson’s YouTube channel, SoulPancake, made a short film about the teen’s life, “My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech,” which has been widely shared this week. If you haven’t had the chance to watch the heartbreaking and incredibly moving documentary, you can do so here.

So, finally, a week later, Mayor Rob Ford addressed the city over the alleged drug-use video that’s for sale on gawker.com…the highlights of his prepared statement are inside, and you tell us…is this going to be enough to put the situation to rest? Was this enough?

The ‘highlights’ of what Mayor Rob Ford said, addressing the media today:…”I do not use crack cocaine and do not have an addiction to crack”….says he cannot comment on a video he has not seen, but says he is not an addict….”For the past week on the advice of my solicitor I was advised not to say a word”….”This past week hasn’t been an easy one. Kate Walsh And All Star Cast In New Upcoming Drama

DirecTV is rounding up an impressive cast for its upcoming Neil LaBute drama Full Circle.

The 10-episode series about a group of 11 people whose lives are intertwined will feature an all-star cast including Bones‘ David Boreanaz, Private Practice‘s Kate Walsh, Harry Potter‘s Tom Felton, The Killing‘s Billy Campbell, Friday Night Lights‘ Minka Kelly, Nip/Tuck‘s Julian McMahon, Akeelah and the Bee‘s Keke Palmer, Devon Gearhart (The Wait), Noah Silver (The Borgias), Ally Sheedy (Welcome to the Rileys), Cheyenne Jackson (Behind the Candelabra) and Robin Weigert (Sons of Anarchy).

Each episode of the drama, which marks the small-screen debut of screenwriter and playwright LaBute (In the Company of Men), will take place in a restaurant and feature a conversation between two characters, with one of the character’s story lines carrying over into the next episode through a conversation with a new character. That character will then be featured in the following episode. The process will continue until the final episode.

‘American Idol’ Finale Causes Stabbing Incident

According to THR:

Two American Idol fans in York, Pennsylvania took a heated debate over season 12′s top two to extremes when their argument ended in multiple stab wounds.

Karen Elaine Harrelson, 48, and Gregory L. Stambaugh, 57, were watching the Idol finale in the basement of Stambaugh’s West Manchester Township home on Wednesday, May 15, when they got into a drunken argument over which finalist — Candice Glover or Kree Harrison — should win the title.

The fight escalated as Harrelson allegedly went into the kitchen to fetch a knife and the two proceeded to stab the other. According to a report in the York Dispatch, the knife exchanged hands at some point, but neither party remembers who stabbed whom first.

Both were treated at York Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of aggravated assault, according to online court documents.

Stambaugh told police that Harrelson went upstairs to the kitchen, got a knife, returned to the basement and stabbed him. He said she then went back to the main floor and Stambaugh followed her and got the knife away from her. In her version, Harrelson claims she got the knife to cut a “piece of cake,” but Stambaugh grabbed a “second knife” to cut her wrist.

Both are still in jail.

One Of The Most Inspirational Stories You’ll Hear…

Zach Sobiech passed away on Monday, May 20 at the age of 18 — but his inspirational message will live on through song. The Minnesota native learned last June that he only had months to live after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 14, and decided to record the song “Clouds” as a farewell message to his family and friends.

The YouTube video, released in December, quickly went viral and has now hit No. 1 on iTunes. With the help of director Justin Baldoni, Sobiech also filmed a 22-minute documentary, My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech.

“I want everyone to know, you don’t have to find out you’re dying to start living,” Sobiech says in the video.

“My closure is being able to get my feelings into these songs so they can have something to remember me by or lean on when I’m gone,” he explains of his album, Fix Me Up. “I want to be remembered as a kid who went down fighting, and didn’t really lose.”

Earlier this month, celebrities filmed a tribute video to Sobiech to help raise awareness to find a cure for childhood cancer. Jason Mraz, Ashley Tisdale, Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms, Rachel Bilson, Jenna Fischer and other stars sang along to Sobiech’s “Clouds” track in the touching video.

When Sobiech passed away on Monday, celebrities took to Twitter to share their condolences and support Sobiech’s legacy.

Doors Open Is This Weekend!

Doors Open is a gateway to Toronto’s past, but also channels the city’s development and transformation since infancy. Over the course of one weekend, Torontonians and visitors alike can experience Toronto through its architectural gems!

This year’s event – running May 25-26 — features 167 buildings that showcase the city’s history, culture, creativity and modernization. Some of the buildings include heritage-designated landmarks, places of worship, factories, historic homes and hotels, and arts institutions.

The program allows visitors to tour through buildings that are normally not open to the public, or places that would charge an entrance fee.

This year’s theme is “creators, makers and innovators” — buildings that have been transformed into modern spaces, while keeping their history in-check.

“Buildings and sites that bring together all kind of creative makers, and Toronto is one of the most innovative cities in the world, so we want to celebrate that,” said Kerri MacDonald, programming supervisor of special events at the City of Toronto.

“[It] gives them a chance to see sites they may have never been able to see before — some of which only open their doors during Doors Open,” MacDonald said.

Two of the event’s highlights this year are its walking tours — 14 of them in total — and a series of talks with architects, designers and community leaders.

“We’re talking about the architecture of Toronto, with reference to its future and of course its past, because we never want to let go of the past as we’re moving into the future,” she said.

One of the top sites to visit, according to MacDonald, is the Bridgepoint Health Centre in East York, which used to be the old Don Jail in Riverdale. The complex was built in 1864, but has since been re-invented as a health care centre.

They’ve taken that original historic architecture and they’ve renovated it to become the administration wing of their hospital, and they’ve actually preserved three of the old jail cells at the bottom of that building. I think that building is going to be really fascinating to see,” MacDonald said.

Along with Bridgepoint, another new addition to this year’s event is the headquarters of Toronto Emergency Medical Services headquarters in North York. The facility, which is normally not open to the public, is from where personnel respond to around 800 emergency calls per day.

“They’re going to actually bring small groups of people in to the room that people call in their 911 calls.”

Also, for those who want to check out a busy newsroom and television studio, be sure to stop by Rogers Studios at Yonge-Dundas Square. The five-storey building, built in 2004, is home to CityNews, City’s “Breakfast Television,” CityNews Channel, Cityline, and OMNI Television.

The station first opened in 1966 as a way to interline the Bloor-Danforth line with the Yonge-University line, thus allowing trains to run along three routes. After a six-month testing period, the TTC deemed two routes as the best option. The station is now used to film movies and commercials.
