Despite being a famous pop star, Shawn Mendes still gets star struck when meeting other big names. Understandably so, when those names include Queen Elizabeth IIPrince Harry and Meghan Markle! While chatting on a recent episode of The Ellen Show, the Canadian superstar opened up about some awkward run-ins he’s had with British royalty.

It’s safe to assume that not many people would feel totally at ease around someone as renowned as Her Majesty – even if you’re performing at her birthday party! Shawn hilariously recalled a moment he had with the monarch before hitting the stage to perform one of his newest tracks. “I’m in this backstage area before you go on stage … and I’m standing there waiting to go on stage and the Queen just walks up next to me,” he remembered, adding that he’s well versed in royal protocol. “You’re not allowed to speak to her unless she speaks to you first, so it was like ten minutes of awkward silence between me and the Queen.”

Not many people can say they’ve had that experience, so although it may have been awkward, it’s definitely something to check off the bucket list! To make matters even funnier, Shawn also bumped into Harry and Meghan the very same day – a moment that he says he’ll never let himself live down. “This is going to be my biggest regret ever. I was walking down the halls and I see them in one room,” he explained. “And they’re just talking and I walked in with this confident and the second they kind of felt me coming, I just turned around. My body went numb and I was like, ‘I can’t do it, I can’t do it.’ I’ve never been so star struck like that.”

One thing fans love most about the Toronto native is how down-to-earth and relatable he is – even as one of the most famous faces in pop music right now. This year, the “Treat You Better” singer was one of the Time’s Most Influential People, and he was overwhelmed being in a room full of so many inspiring Hollywood stars, entrepreneurs and activists. “I think when you see your name on something like that, it’s a very cool moment, but it’s not until you actually step into the room with those people on the list,” he gushed. “I was blown away I was even in the room with those types of people.”
