Sam Smith has blessed us with his second studio album, The Thrill of it All and we couldn’t be happier!

The Thrill of it All serves as the follow up to Sam’s hugely successful debut album, In the Lonely Hour which won Sam 4 Grammy Awards back in 2015 (‘Best New Artist’, ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’, ‘Record & Song of the Year’).

Sam’s new album features the lead single, ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’, which he debuted in September.

Sam spoke to Radio.com about his inspiration for this new single. Apparently, it was inspired by a recent break up—or three! The star revealed, “I was in a relationship, a pretty short brief one, and I basically got dumped a few times and kept going back.

He continued openly: “It was a very tumultuous relationship and every time it would hit a wall, I just got better and better at saying goodbye. When it did finally come to an end, I was just ready and prepped. I felt like a bit of a master of heartbreak by that time,” he shared with a smile.

Sam even had some relationship advice for his fans going through relationship issues, “The first thing you do is drink and go out with friends and forget about it. And then you sit with yourself and grieve,” he shared, continuing, “It’s so important to just sit alone and think about what that relationship was, the positives and negatives, and just sit and live with it.”

Sam also performed the single this season on an episode of Saturday Night Live.

Another song Sam released prior to the release of The Thrill of It All was a beautiful ballad called, ‘Pray’.

‘Pray’ was produced by Sam’s long-time producer Jimmy Naples and Timbaland, the latter whom Sam was spotted with in studio earlier this year.

Upon releasing ‘Pray’, Sam said “I hope it becomes your friend in those deep dark nights of confusion & loneliness.”

The song was inspired by a trip Sam took to Iraq to work with the War Child charity.

He told Billboard, “I spent five days in Mosul and came back embarrassed that I had known so little about the world and other people’s lives…I went back to that great Nina Simone quote, that it is important to speak about the times you live in. I hadn’t done that; I’d just written a bunch of songs about love. So I wanted to write about how I’m now starting to open my eyes, at 25, to what is going on in the rest of the world, and that it’s not always pretty.”

For Sam, working on the new album all began with track number six on the album, ‘Him’.

He told Zane Lowe of Beats 1 Radio, “So I was writing this album in 2015 on tour. I wrote ‘Him’ on tour in Sydney. I wrote about 10 or 13 songs before the Oscars.”

Almost immediately after the Oscars, Sam hit the studio with Naples; Sam also worked with ‘PooBear’ who he says, “helped me write the song that was the core of the new album, which is called ‘Burning’.

What’s Sam’s favourite track from his new album?

Well, In a new interview with BBC Radio’s MistaJam, Sam says that ‘Burning’ is a his favourite song off of The Thrill Of It All.

Sam explained, “It’s the most personal song I’ve ever written in my life.  I was going through a really tough time last year. I live in London, and I went through a breakup. And I dealt with the breakup in a bad way, and I was just going out way too much. I was burning, in a way.  I let everything go in that song and that song to me is about fame as well, and the responsibilities I felt and the pressure and my relationship with my voice and how I was a bit rebellious last year. It’s about self-destruction.”

Having listened to the full album, I’d say my favourite record is track number three, ‘One Last Song’. It just hits me right in the feels.
