He started off 2017 by revealing that he was going to release new music after a year off, and Ed Sheeran did not disappoint!

Last night, he released two new songs, ‘Castle on the Hill’ and ‘Shape of You’.

This morning, Ed stopped by BBC Radio 1 and spoke about his new music.

He revealed that the two singles will be on his forthcoming album, which will be called Divide, which Ed revealed himself on Twitter.

Ed spoke candidly about each song, first touching on ‘Castle on the Hill’ which he described as “a love song to Suffolk” (his hometown).

He also said, “Castle on the Hill is a love song for Suffolk because I don’t think anyone has ever done that. I’ve shot the music video actually in Suffolk and the cast of it are people from my high school…The main guy who looks just like me is weirdly from my sixth form.”

Ed also revealed that it was the second song that he had completed for the album and that he wrote it during the summer of 2015.

Now, if you’ve listened to Ed’s second single, ‘Shape of You’, this next tidbit will make a lot of sense; he originally wrote it for Rihanna.

Ed told BBC Radio, “I was singing some of the lyrics and was like Rihanna is not going to sing these words so kept it to myself.”

While we’re excited to have new music from Ed here in 2017, originally we were supposed to get it a few months sooner, but he decided to wait because September is a busy time for new music releases.

You know who didn’t have to wait until now to hear new Ed Sheeran? The cast of Game of Thrones.

Better late than never right?
