With the exit of American Idol judges Steve Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, the names being tossed about as possible replacements keeps growing. Mariah Carey has long been on the list, but her husband Nick Cannon says Fox cannot afford the singer. Meanwhile the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin says she would like to come on board for the 12th season. Aretha sure would know her stuff!

Reality TV got quite the shakeup last Friday when both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler confirmed that they were stepping down from the judging table and leaving Fox’s talent competition show, American Idol. As was the case when Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger got the ax from The X-Factor, speculation as to who will step in to fill the departing judges’ shoes has already begun to fly fast and furiously. Could Mariah Carey be one of your new Idol judges? What about Aretha Franklin? Or do we even care at all?
According to People, a source has revealed that Mariah is in “serious talks” to become one of the new Idol judges. However, Mariah’s hubby, Nick Cannon, seems to think that a deal actually coming to fruition is unlikely. He apparently told one of TMZ’s photographers that it’s going to take a huge amount of money to get Mariah in JLo’s seat: “I don’t know if they can afford Mariah Carey,” he said. “That’s a lot of money. If they gave JLo $20 million, they might have to double that!” Yowza.
Meanwhile, Aretha Franklin allegedly emailed CNN over the weekend saying that she would be happy to step in for JLo or Steven—as long as she can have Patti LaBelle at her side. Whether or not she actually plans to try to get herself in the running for the spot, however, remains to be seen; in addition to Mariah Carey, other names being tossed around include former Idol contestant Adam Lambert.
Of course, the other point of view is that American Idol should just be put to rest. After 11 seasons, are we really seeing anything new and exciting come from the show? Not really (though I can kind of get behind Phillip Phillips, ridiculous name and all). Maybe it’s time for it to say goodbye.
