Toronto transit riders will likely pay more for less come January.
Toronto Transit Commission staff are recommending the agency hike ticket and token prices by 10 CENTS PER YEAR through 2015 as a way of shoring up its finances!
The increase would come as the city’s transit operator is lopping service from more than 50 routes across Toronto to meet City Hall’s demands for 10-per-cent cuts from every department and agency.
The TTC’s chief general manager admits the fare increase could turn away riders but says he can’t get any commitment from the city or other levels of government to make up for an annual TTC funding gap that could reach over $200-million by 2015.
“We’re doing the best we can do with the least impact on customers with the money that we’ve got,” said Gary Webster. “I’ve said many times this is not what anybody would like to do, with ridership growing, to actually make service worse.”
Ridership is expected to hit a record for the fifth consecutive year in 2012 with over 507-million trips.
The recommendation would jack up the price of a Metropass to $141 from $121 by 2015. Child and senior fares would increase by five cents and 10 cents a year, respectively.
The fare-box provides roughly two out of every three dollars the TTC spends, the rest coming largely from a city subsidy that is expected to total $406-million next year.
Joe Mihevc, former vice-chair of the TTC, applauded the agency for implementing a long-term fare strategy but argued the fiscal uncertainty will remain until Queen’s Park chips in. “The answer to the TTC’s budget woes are going to have to be solved by the province sooner or later,” he said “They will have to become partners.”
Provincial Municipal Affairs Minister Kathleen Wynne shot down any immediate hopes of the Liberal government riding to the rescue on Thursday, telling MPPs the city is on its own when it comes to TTC budget issues.
The TTC will debate the staff recommendations on Dec. 14.

I think the raise in fare is unreasonable this year. In 2009 the fare increased $.25. I AM a ttc driver, and the amount of times I get yelled at from passengers in regards to these increases is unbelievable!! Maybe one day driver’s will be asked their opinion first and how the passengers feel and than think of doing an increase. Or maybe government officials should secretly ride our buses and see what the attitude is. Toronto is mainly a poorer city and it’s very hard for our seniors, our students, our retirees, are families on assistance, or on unemployment, our low income families, to come up with the fare at this present time. Alot of people scam the ttc by short changing us. They simply dont have the fare in order to get to a doctor’s appt, to school, to a minimum wage paying job, to daycare to get their child, to pick up medicine or groceries… And to top if off reduce service!!!! Do you know how many times I have to by pass a stop, whether it’s raining or not, because my bus is overcrowded. Passengers are supposed to stand behind the “white” line, but try telling someone that when you stop in front of them to let someone off, and it’s cold or they’re late, all they see is a little room at the front so they hop on… It’s hard to tell the public they have to wait for the next bus in however many minutes. Get it together Toronto,, and Mr Ford (thank God I know longer live in Toronto, now I dont have the right to complain about your Mayor-sorry) We are working without an updated contract at the moment- does anyone remember that!? GOOD LUCK

All these fare increases are just to keep TTC executives salary increasing, benefits and other perks untouch…Millions of transit riders suffer just to keep TTC executives and its employees well off.

Take a wait and see attitude approach; it may or may not happen. Next year for sure, but things can turn around and change for the better (hopefully!) or never? I would rather BELIEVE hopefully, right Fiona honey; as in Christmas MIRACLES happening (and they do), like for me and you this year sweetheart. I keep BELIEVING that things will get better.
