The Durham Catholic District School Board is about to take the first step in what could become a ban on kilt-wearing in local schools.
Kilts have been a traditional part of the secondary school uniform but trustee Chris Leahy says the kilts are being worn way too short.
“Are they really looking to represent the community in the best possible way when they have such a short skirt,” he said.
Leahy says he has been getting complaints from parents and others in the community that the kilts are being hiked up too high, so he’s bringing a motion before the board to ban the garment.

The board, which is responsible for schools in Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and several other communities east of Toronto, will consider the motion at its regular meeting on Nov. 28.
At least one student says she knows why the girls wear their kilts rolled up.
“You get more attention when your kilt is a little bit shorter,” she told CBC News.
Although there are rules about the kilt length, most students ignore them and the girls are rarely reprimanded.
Leahy says teachers shouldn’t have to waste time monitoring hem lines and so the solution is obvious.
“Since it’s unreasonable to get the administration and teachers to enforce it — and it’s unreasonable I guess for the girls to keep it the right length — then then best option is to eliminate it.”

Leahy suggests the girls wear trousers most of the time and shorts when the weather is hot.
If the motion is passed, it would still have to go to local parent-councils for further discussion.
It would then be up to each individual school to make the ultimate decision.
Other Catholic boards in Ontario, including those in Toronto, Halton, Peterborough and Clarington, have taken measures to give schools the power to ban kilts.
I’d love to know your thoughts on kilts in schools….are they even necessary anymore? Do the rules just need to be enforced? How do you monitor your daughter when she leaves for school? (and, how do you monitor when you’re not around?)

I think that Kilts for school uniforms should be banned. I’m 23 years old and I don’t like seeing other girls behinds when they are walking down the streets ( even in the winter, Ptbo. and Oshawa area). I don’t leave my house looking like this! So why is this allowed? Haven’t schools and people heard of Mystery? And being classy not TRASHY!!

Yes, definitely. My 3 daughters go to French Catholic school in Whitby (St-Charles Garnier) and the school at the request of parents, have banned the kilts for this current year. This was definitely a problem for me and my husband. Of course, the girls would leave the house wearing the kilt at the correct height but as soon as they were outside, they would roll it up. At some point, I had to hide the kilt and I eventually threw it out however, they were so desperate that they went to the lost and found items at school to get a used one and would hide it from me and my husband. It got to the point where they would hide it and change at school… and change back at night!! This was just becoming a nightmare. It was so short, you could almost see the bum in the back… this is a good thing for every parents I am sure!

I do believe that the kilts should be knee length,it is very appropriate and more conserving especially for schoo; this way they will know how to sit like a real lady .

I went to an all girl catholic school and we rolled our kilts up as well and that was more than 40 years ago! They say parents are complaining. Tell those parents to talk to their kids. It is not the school’s job to discuss appearance, dress and social mores with the students. That role belongs to the parents. I cant believe the nonsense schools put forward as issues – balls in the school yards, short skirts. What about bullying, drugs, gangs. Push the onus back on the ones who should own it – PARENTS.
PARENTS stop looking the other way and take responsibility for the actions of your children. Stop looking for someone else to blame when they are not perfect – neither are you.

There is no need to band the \\\’Kilts\\\’ . Kilt in the photograph is definitely too short for school uniform. However the school could keep that length providing it is worn with leotard or Leggings i.e. Gap Canada Tights and leggings or HUE Co Leggings
By making that change, the school would be meeting the children halfway, and setting a nice stylish but respectable bar for all concerned.
NB:
One of the hottest looks this fall is definitely leggings and opaque tights. Worn with long sweaters, dresses or short skirts and tucked into knee-high boots, or even cuter with ballet flats

This is old news in York Catholic District School Board – we found the same thing – kilts were being worn inappropriately so now girls wear slacks – too bad we can’t ban the tightness of those!!

I worn a kilt to high school back in the 70\\\’s and we rolled them up as soon as we left home or school. Parents can\\\’t monitor their daughters all the time and girls will do what they want to when Mom and Dad aren\\\’t around. I do believe though the kilts are way too short, teenager girls don\\\’t really see how trashy they look. You can see their underwear if they bend over even slightly and a lot of them wear pretty skimpy panties ever thongs. I\\\’d say change the uniform to pants, they\\\’ll be warmer and classier looking. If I knew then what I know now……I\\\’d be ok with pants on a cold winter day! After all they are supposed to be representing their Christian schools.

So you’re okay if they get into trouble or become sexually active at a much younger age then need be. Will you be picking up those pieces with the parents of those children? I thought not.

What took you so long? It is about time !! I see these girls on the street and on the bus and I wonder what they are thinking. SOmetimes the wind is very strong and their kilts blow up and they either have on no underwear or just a thong and it is totally disgusting. They obviously have no pride in themselves. I went to private school and ours had to be 2″ above the knee when kneeling and the nuns would come around and measure. We also wore tights underneath.

Absolutely! I live near two schools in durham and Im tired of seeing lil girls bums! Dont neet my two year old as well looking at that. and if the schools cannot control the legth than they absolutely should be banned. These girls are not old enough to understand true respect for themselves unfortunately due to media and parents not enforcing rules ( I can tell you one thing i would be doing spot checks at my kids school to make sure her skirt wasnt hikeds up), their only thoughts are how to get more attention from boys! I completely understand that parents need to step it up a notch as well but clearly they arent so next step should be the school board kicking in.

they wear them WAY to short. Schools MUST regulate the length… rules are rules and they’re given to our children for a reason! If I were a teacher I’d make all the girls clean off their seats with disinfectant before leaving the class because you just know that their practically bare a**es are touching the seats! UNSANITARY!!!!

Why are so many things in life being “attempted to be banned”, what’s next breathing? Oh no wait, there maybe a new tax on it! (who knows?). I disagree and I would leave tyhe kilts alone and people should “lighten up”. If i had a daugther who wore that kilt,I believe she would be smart enough to know that boys reach an age when they start looking girls and vice versa whether the girls are wearing short skirts or not (age 13 right?).
I agree, it’s the parents responsibility to teach kids these facts of life and their kids should go to school feeling confident and not worried what’s going to be banned next!

i think the kilts should be banned. many teenagers and kids have acted really disrespectfully wearing them. i have seen little kids wearing these trying to come-on to adult men who are married and with there wife on the ttc bus. it’s really disapointing. the kids are just not being taught to be respectful of others and there unions. too many of them act like they want to sleep with the men and they are puting axes into others relationships and playing these awful sex games…and in full view of anyone who happens to be on the busses. yes, please bann them. and also train them in knowing how to behave around adults and there own peers. because this Promiscuous behavour is really out of hand and men are also using this as an excuse to rape children on top of everything else.
let us help to train these kids and each other on how to behave around others. these kilts are not helping them or doing them any good right now, that is for sure.

@ Michelle, if you read this, I do apologize for posting that on your comment. My mouse froze and I submitted it on your comment somehow.
I think that schools should be making it mandatory for physical education classes to show male and female students just what can happen and eventually lead to happening if they wear these clothes. It’s only a matter of time before they get pregnant. Do parents or even siblings really want to be faced with such devastating results of clothing? This isn’t just exaggerating, it’s life.
Girl + short skirt = Bum out
Boy looks.
They talk, they flirt, they touch so on and so forth. Then nine months later, guess who is going to take care of that child, or be out in the streets (not all parents have an understanding of this situation, I know I wouldn’t)
At 13 these girls know what they’re wearing these clothes the way they do for a reason. It might just be for attention but there are REAL sicko’s out there that don’t care what that girls future may hold for her. So lets all think about that.
Or would these young individuals want STD’s some that are incurable and with you for life? I.E Syphilis.

If you don’t like kilts, then don’t send your children to Catholic school. There are much bigger problems in the world than kilt lengths. Get a life.
Those children already suffer from wearing a uniform each day. I went to Catholic school, wore a kilt, and rolled it up. I am not, and have never been pregnant, and always wore shorts under my kilt… I find it hard to believe that kilts are the reason for the pregnancy, flirting, hitting on married men, or bad parenting. Not sure how long ago you were teenagers, but did you listen to your parents?

Actually, you should really look up the adolescent pregnancy percentages. They’ve gone up drastically. I know in my public school we were not allowed to wear skirts of any kind, if the girls did they were asked to borrow someone’s sweat pants or have their parents come and pick them up. I wasn’t you’re typical teenager I don’t follow crowds, as much of society does today. I was diagnosed with a disease that made me grow up and be mature. So yes, I did listen to what my parents were saying to me. Short shorts and mini skirts are becoming disgusting, it’s not fashion, it’s just trashy. So therefore Eli, maybe you were one of the girls that didn’t listen, but I’m sure you regret some of you’re actions.
Thanks, Have a wonderful day
