The drop-side rail hardware on the cribs can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches, a hazardous gap is created between the drop-side rail and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become wedged or entrapped, posing risks of suffocation and strangulation. In addition, children can fall out of the crib when the drop-side rail falls unexpectedly or detaches from the crib. Drop-side rail failures can also occur due to incorrect assembly or with age-related wear and tear.
No incidents or injuries involving the recalled drop side cribs were reported to Health Canada.

CPSC and the firm are aware of 21 incidents involving drop sides that failed or detached. No injuries have been reported.
Corrective Action
Consumers should carefully examine the drop-side rail hardware for any signs of damage. If consumers determine that the drop-side hardware is broken, loose, missing, or deformed or that there are any other reasons for concern, consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative safe sleeping environment for their baby.
Any consumer with a crib subject to this recall should contact Shermag to receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side of the crib to a fixed side.

Better safe then sorry; better to check before you buy anyway. Recalls can’t always be avoided no matter what you do, but I guess using the Health Canada and Consumer Reports web sites (Consumer Report Magazine) would help.
