Papayas recalled in Canada after U.S. salmonella outbreak….!

Papayas that were distributed nationwide are being recalled because they could be contaminated with salmonella.

Agromod Produce Inc., a food distributor based in Texas, announced the recall on Saturday.

A salmonella outbreak south of the border has resulted in 97 reported cases of illness, including 10 hospitalizations across the United States, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is working with the FDA and is continuing its investigation to have the affected product removed from the marketplace, according to a press release posted on its website.

The papayas originated in Mexico and have been sold under the brand names of Blondie, Yaya, Mananita and Tastylicious.

Anyone who bought the fruit prior to July 23 is urged to return them to the place of purchase.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people and in others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with the bug often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare cases, a salmonella infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.
